European Carp
Lachlan and his first fish at 5 months old - we start them young in the Spooled Family
Cause most of you were chasing the Easter Bunny. I decided to use this vary rare FREE time for my kids. I took them down to Nepean River in the hope that I would be able to initiate Lachlan (my 5 month old) into his first fishing experience.

I had two rigs out. One for mullet and one for carp, to increase my chances of a hookup. As mum (my wife) was in town literally (Sydney or more so Bondi) I had all three children. Isabelle – 4, Sienna – 2 & Lachlan (as above – 5 months).

Lachlan had not yet caught a fish (obviously – though we do start them young  ) and Sienna had caught but only a few.

There were far to many Terrorists (tourists) for my liking and for some unknown reason the majority of them seemed to be American. Look I know we are supposed to love Americans as somewhere along the line it is good for business. But at the risk of piing every American off that comes to the Spooled site (about 25% of all visitors) jeez some of them $hit me.

Spooled is known for very much telling it like it is. A no Bullcrap policy applies on most things so it would be remise of me not to say that 2 separate groups of Yanks seemed to profess the absolute Funken Wagnalls on absolutely everything pied me off. I loved the time with my kids and loved that I was able to drop a carp in the young blokes lap and expose the girls to fishing one more time. But I was pleased to be leaving the likes of rock throwing children behind, I must admit. Look my children are no angels and God forbid if they grow up to be anything like their father, but they do know this. YOU DO NOT THROW ROCKS IN THE WATER WHERE YOU/SOMEONE/ANYONE ARE/IS FISHING.

I will excuse the fact that this single mother obviously does not fish, but where do you get off allowing your child to throw boulders in the water where someone is fishing. Had I been a complete Ogre I would have dis-allowed my own children (who know better) to follow suit and therefore kill any fun that these kids where now having. In the interest of keeping the peace and more so allowing Kids to be Kids (as I had already hooked and landed one carp) I allowed this rock throwing event to transpire.

When they eventually left and I told my children that they were no longer to throw rocks in the water, which ceased immediately and I settled down to a few more casts.

Fishing with the kids is a pretty laid back affair for me and rarely do I fish at all but rather facilitate line untangling, casting, couching, rebaiting and setting the hook (like every other Dad in existence). Fishing with the kids is usually not about fishing and this expedition was no different.

Intrusion gone, I had a few more recasts as the slight breeze pushed the float down stream and forced yet another retrieval before a short flick sent it out again. I was able to land one more small Bass. He took a very small piece of floated bread at around 4pm. While quite unusual Sienna quiet enjoyed landing him.

To all things wet and scaley.

Tight Lines all…. richard
