▲TopPINKY’S WITH A TWIST
Nigel Webster is a bloke that likes his fishing. From Bream to Barra and beyond he has an uncanny knack of pulling off some great captures.Nigel was recently fishing an inshore reef system early one morning, jigging his favourite metal lures for Mackerel.
He dropped a Twisty to the bottom with the intention of a fast burn to the surface, but four turns on the handle into the retrieve, the lure was well and truly hammered.
Although the fish was clearly not a mackerel due to plenty of head shaking and short powerful surges, the fish put up a spirited fight and Nigel was surprised when this fine Pink Snapper surfaced.
At 7.5 kilos the Snapper was a great capture and was taken on a 30 gram Chrome Halco Twisty.
Twistys can also be rigged with a small assist hook, deep jigging style and the fluttering action on the drop makes the lure attractive to many species not normally targeted on the lure with Pink Snapper, Coral Trout and even Red Emperor on the cards over the right bottom structure.
▲TopTerminal Talk
Were you aware that Halco Tackle produce a number of specialised terminal tackle products to compliment their fantastic plastic wood and metal lures? If not, perhaps its time that you were told a little about some of these products along with their applications.
Halco currently produce three different types of custom hook rigs including simple ganged hooks in sizes 1/0 up to 6/0. All are built with quality Mustad hooks.
Bait Traces are a specialty item that consist of a quality multi strand wire trace attached to a gang of hook and once again are available in sizes 1/0 to 6/0.
Mulie Rigs are also available and designed especially with larger Tailor in mind. The rig consists of a limerick hook connected to a suicide pattern hook via a very small rolling swivel with a trailing treble designed to beat the tail biting antics of Tailor, Mackerel and many other predatory species.
Halco also produce several options in terms of wire traces, ideal for trolling Laser Pros and the like.
Halco Snap Traces use very strong crane swivels attached to clear nylon coated multi strand wire and are finished with a quality coastlock snap. Aimed more at the value end of the market, these traces are available in 11 inch and 20 inch lengths in breaking strains of 20lb up to 150lb.
Halco Supa Snap Traces are the premium end trace product manufactured with the best Japanese componentry available. They feature a super strong rolling swivel at one end attached to a premium nylon coated black multi strand wire with the best quality crosslock snap available terminating the trace. These traces are the finest available and come in 11 and 20 inch lengths and breaking strains ranging from 20 to 150lb.
▲TopROD MACKENZIE • A MAN OF COD
You may not know the name Rod Mackenzie but those in the know rate him an expert in the field of catching Murray Cod.Those that have not experienced fishing for these magnificent creatures, find it difficult to imagine fish in excess of 100lb coming out of the slow flowing, discoloured fresh water which is their home. They certainly don't get that way unless they eat a fair bit and using lures with a bit of size about them is one way to get their interest.
Lately Rod and his mates have been doing some experimenting with large deep running minnow style lures with some interesting results.
Pictured hereabouts is a shot of a beautiful specimen caught on a Laser Pro 190XDD at a secret location somewhere on the Murray River.
Although generally thought of as a blue water trolling lure, the Crazy Deep 190 proved successful on Rod’s most recent trip and proves, sometimes size does matter.
