Over 70 new recreational anglers were introduced to the enjoyment of fishing after taking part in Go Fishing in Victoria days at Jubilee Lake near Daylesford and Kennington Reservoir in Bendigo, Fisheries Victoria Acting Executive Director Dallas D’Silva said today.

Mr D’Silva said 40 students from St Augustine’s Primary School in Maryborough and 22 students from Natte Yallock travelled to the lakes to learn more about recreational fishing.

The students learned about fishing safely, catch limits, how to handle fish properly, looking after the aquatic environment and the lifecycle of fish.

As part of the experience students, teachers and family members helped release rainbow trout, which had been transported to the venues from the Snobs Creek fish production facility near Eildon.

Local angling club and Fishcare volunteers then provided practical fishing instruction including casting, baiting up, detecting bites and landing fish.

Kennington Reservoir also hosted a group of 12 from Vision Australia. Participants handled fibreglass models of freshwater fish then rolled up their sleeves and released hatchery reared trout into the cool waters of the reservoir.

The rainbow trout released into both lakes for these newcomers were mostly advanced yearlings of approximately 200 grams, but also included ‘Premier’ size fish over a kilogram and huge ex-brood fish of 3 kg or more.

Trout releases improve fishing opportunities for families over winter and compliment the much larger Family Fishing Lakes stocking program which recently saw more than 13,000 trout released into 44 small lakes for the June school holidays.

The Go Fishing in Victoria initiative will host larger family fishing festivals at Kennington Reservoir on Sunday 10 August, Lillydale Lake on Saturday 20 September and at Jubilee Lake on Saturday 18 October.

Event registration is free of charge and more information can be downloaded from www.dpi.vic.gov.au/gofishing
