Hi DioDog sorry you have not had any replies. I don't live in sydney anymore but I'll tell you what I used to do. I used to love to go and catch squid on a squid jig. Sylvania Waters I used to get heaps of arrow squid and tiny calamari from that wharf. Kept them for bait. I'd try over near cronulla in between cronulla and bundeena anywhere near the rocks or over the top of the weed beds for food sized squid. I'd keep em in a bucket and then take them under como bridge and fish them on the bottom on the down stream side of a pileon for jewies and big tailor.

I've tried hardbodies and softplastics from the bush side of como rail bridge but all I got were small tailor.

If you just want to catch fish and don't care how big they are then get a 7ft soft plastic rod and rig it with 4 pound line. This will give you some great casting distance. Try some soft plastics like atomic chicken or nuclear chicken whatever its called and walk any beach casting and using a dead slow retrieve. It's nothing to pull in 30 to 40 baby flathead as you place a cast every 10 metres or so along the beach. If you get a decent sized fish then concentrate on that area as they school. Watch the water closely as you may see some fish in which case I'd change to a metal slug like a spanish raider or something small and get into the tailor and salmon. Fishing around any channells or sandbars will increase your catch as will fishing the turn of the tides as well as sun up and sun down.

At San Souci you'd be better off walking along the beach casting over the weeds for flathead. Wade out to about knee depth and walk along doing that. you need to be near the weed. I got 9 good sized flatties one afternoon there doing that. It was an overcast day at hightide. Either soft plastics or a floating hard bodied lure will suffice. When your hardbodied lure hits bottom or weed then give it some slack and let if float up off the bottom before continuing your retrieve. Wear polaroids as you can often see the flatties following your lure in.

Good luck.. Dicko.. I'd stick to the surf beaches personally if you want to have the best chance of fish on lures. There's a bit of a knack to keeping your lure weed free. But you will learn fast. If you keep your main line nice and light you'll definately catch more fish..

Dio..

The best way to catch fish on lures is to decide what you want to catch before you even leave home. Flathead are by far the easiest thing to catch on a lure so I rekon you should start there and do some research about where they like to be at different stages of the tide and their favourite ambush sites. Good luck..

Dicko..
