Howdy all! hope we are all getting hooked up to some fun fish.

i have recently devoloped an interest in fishing lures in Lake Maquarie as i have fished in it for years but using baits,

so i went got a nice rod with a nice tip for flicking lures, tuned my reel up with some 6lb fireline and am keen to attack it! Only prob i enter the tackle shop to buy a few lures and WoW! im faced with a monster selection which really threw me,

So i buy a few soft plastic and a few hardbodied lures, I was hoping a few of you may be able to give me the name of a few lures you recommend for using in lake maquarie, I mainly aim at catching bream and flathead. i ended up buying a rebel crawfish a few spanyid raiders hunting tailor but other than that i was just put off by the huge selection and lack of knowledge when it comes to lures, So any and all suggestion would be greatly appreciated

G'Day Empty,

This is not a bad starting point. Click the following link Fishing the Central Coast

We primarily use soft plastics when fishing the region. Berkley 3" minnow in watermelon, are probably the pick of the lot for us.

Jewie baits I beleive. The bait of choice for Jewfish is Squid. Although I know that live mullet are also used and Long Tom too. I have never really done any amount of Jewfish Fishing to be any authority, if fact quite the contrary. But I have fished for them a little and do know the above baits are used.

Flathead will also pick up Long Tom baits. Tailor would definately have a go (it would be part of their diet too).

Small Tailor are another fish that can also be fished live for Jew I beleive. jiggler may do it, I am not sure? However he is off air temporarily, should be back online in a week or two though.

Hi Mate,

A few lures that produce for me on Bream are Ecogear SX40s and Halco Scorpions and the small Juros.

For flathead lately I have been using the Bushy Stiffys and pick up quite a few.

Hope that helps you out a little.

Dan

G'Day Empty. In regards to the long tom as a Jew bait I can't see why not. Particularly off the rocks where after squid a live pike probably would be the next choice, being that long tom are not dissimilar to a pike. The fresh water is a good thing but fish closer to the channel than higher up as all the big bities are waiting for the small bities trying to escape the fresh and also the extra flow causes the not so big and strong to get flushed out. With your soft plastics though Empty, cast them out and let them sink right to the bottom then do a lift or a flick and pause type retrieve, varying the type of lift and length of pause until you find want the fish respond to more readily. you will find it varies from day to day, species to species.

Also Empty get yourself to blacksmiths beach early morning, high tide when we have had a couple of days of westerlies. Rig up a spin rod with one of your raiders and go for a walk and watch the water. If you see the birds diving or some water explosions cast in and wind as fast as you can. Salmon and tailor are on the menu here.
