Mick first became involved with the fly-fishing
fraternity in 1962 when he joined the Red Tag Fly-fishers’ Club in Melbourne. Over the years Mick has been involved with the formation or acted as a member of a number of organisations, with various degrees of participation:-

This column has appeared in each issue of Freshwater Fishing since issue 4. Fly Talk is conservatively being read by in excess of some 35,000 people throughout Australia. Various articles that have been published by Modern Fishing’s Fly-Fishing Annual, Woorilla Magazine (environmental publication), AFN’s Flyfisher’s Annual, The Flyfisher’s Journal, London and Jarvis Walker’s Australian Fishing Tackle Magazine, with a circulation of over 1.2 million copies and the “The Art of Angling” magazine in America (issue 4).

In 1995 the first of two fly-tying videos were released called Mick Hall’s Fly Tying Masterclass 1 & 2, closely followed by Masterclass 3, Saltwater Fly Tying Methods. Recently another twin DVD, Making Mayflies, has also been released.

Over the past few years Mick has appeared on the SBS Network’s fishing program “Wildfish” with Peter Morse, participating in episode one, in Tasmania.

In the past Mick gave a weekly Eildon fishing report on the 3AW Rex Hunt Fishing Show. Currently gives regular freshwater fishing reports every week on UGFM, Melbourne’s 3SEN with Glenn Knight and appears as a regular panel member on 3SER’s fishing program.

On five occasions Mick has competed in the One Fly Event held at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, U.S.A. During the 1996 event, Mick was fortunate enough to receive the highly prestigious and sought after Peter Crosby/Dick Carlsburg award for Sportsmanship. It should be noted that it was the first time this award has been given to a non-American citizen. Frank Hussey from Tasmania won the individual award on a fly that Mick created, named the Tassie Tarantula. For fly tiers who create a winning fly, they receive as much accolade as those who win the event.Mick has also by invitation attended the British Fly Fair in England to demonstrate his fly tying techniques.

For more than thirty-five years Mick has been giving regular talk nights at the various clubs around Australia. In recent times in Victoria this has developed into full-blown Mustad workshop days, teaching or demonstrating the art of fly tying.
Mick has made regular appearances at the following promotions:
The Melbourne Boat Show, Sydney Tackle Show, Melbourne Tackle Show (Rex Hunt, K-Mart and Nissan), The Great Bronte Tie-In, Tasmania and the Australian Fly-tying
Championships (judging).
Fly fishing, Fly-tying & Fly-casting instructional history From approximately 1970 onwards Mick has been actively involved in instructing anglers in the art of fly-fishing, casting and fly tying at all levels.
