FISHING HISTORY

Back in the early sixties I start fishing the Georges River and Botany Bay for bream, flathead, luderick and whiting, progressing to the Port Hacking and Woronora Rivers, adding leatherjackets, crabs, tailor, mullet and mulloway to the list.

When travelling to Queensland for my annual holidays with dad and mum, we would stop off at a number of places so that we could fish our way up to Brisbane. The return trip would be the same as the one going up. Fish as many place as the time would allow.

I have been fishing off the beaches since I was 10 and the rocks since I was 14 and over the years I have travelled around the coastline of Australia fishing in both very populated and remote areas. In those early years most of my beach and rock fishing was concentrated from Palm Beach in Sydney and down to Seven Mile Beach at Gerroa. It was when I turned 21 that I felt the urge to explore many other beaches and rocks that can be found around Australia. In 1975 I found myself in Western Australia fishing beaches and rock platforms from Yanchep, just north of Perth and south to Margaret River. While over in the west I also fished some of the remote beaches from Cape Freycinet to Albany. On my way back to the east coast of Australia I fished at places like Ceduna, Portland, Barwon Heads, Wilson’s Promontory and Mallacoota.

Throughout my school and working years I continued to fish venues throughout New South Wales, and then interstate to Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, Queensland and Western Australia. I now live back in Sydney, and while continuing to fish, I have developed, written and taught a course on recreational fishing for TAFE.

Since then I have started up fishing classes in various tackle and boating shops throughout Sydney. They are Amazon Tackle at Wetheriel Park, Drummoyne Bait and Tackle at Drummoyne and Windybank’s Bait and Tackle at Mount Colah. I also give fishing and tackle talks to around 6 fishing clubs throughout the year.

Back in 2002 I wrote a book for Australian Fishing Network (AFN) on a Fishing Guide to Sydney and Hawkesbury waterways. Late 2005 I wrote another book for AFN on How to fish the Beaches and Rocks of Australia and last but not least I put together a DVD with Scotty Lyons from Southern Sydney Fishing Tours called “A Day on the Bay”.

I am currently working on another 2 projects, a book that will take in most fishing places from Wollongong to Eden and another DVD with Scott on the Port Hacking River. I have been sponsored by Shakespeare/Pflueger for approximately 15 years as one of their Pro Anglers who test out their range of fishing tackle. They have also had me put together a number of articles and a fishing tips page for their web site.
